There may be circumstances where you might not want to allow guest access to your machine. This might be simply personal preference or because local system policies prohibit unauthorised access to the network, or perhaps you have a metered internet connection.

In order to complete this task you will need to restart Unity. This will close any programs you have open without warning. Please ensure that you have saved all your work before continuing.

Either using the terminal or by pushing alt+F2 to open a command prompt, run the following command:

sudo gedit /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf

This will open the configuration file for editing, in this case using Gedit. As you are editing a system file, the sudo command will give you administrative privileges. This will ask you for your password.

Insert the following line at the bottom of the file:

allow-guest=false

Save the file and, either in the terminal or by pushing alt+F2 run the following command (remembering to save all your work before you do):

sudo restart lightdm

+You will now be presented with a login screen without a 'guest' option. In order to renable it, simply remove the line using the process outlined above.
