Bug Description

I tried to enable esm-infra by: pro enable esm-infra
1) Description: Ubuntu 18.04.6 LTS Release: 18.04
2) apt-cache policy ubuntu-advantage-tools
   ubuntu-advantage-tools:
    Installato: 27.14.4~18.04
    Candidato: 27.14.4~18.04
    Tabella versione:
    *** 27.14.4~18.04 500
        500 http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu bionic-updates/main amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Thanks for reporting this bug

This is a very unusual situation, where:
a) validation of your esm-infra credentials succeeded
b) the output of apt-helper, for some reason, is not UTF-8 - then we blow up trying to decode...

I cannot reproduce this bug.
a) Are you able to reproduce this on a fresh system?
b) Is the behavior the same, even if you detach then attach again?
c) Are all packages in the system up to date? Is the behavior the same, even after running 'sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade'?

Hi Rodrigo,
thanks for your kind answer.
I try to answer at every point of your questions:
1) In fresh system I don't get the problem; so I think it's related to some
kind of configuration; it's a system I setup some years ago and now I
wanted to extend the lts period.
2) I've tried to detach and re-attach UA always with the same result; I
even tried a friend's token to see if it was related to my account
3) I've made several time the apt update and upgrade (both as sudo and as
root user); I've done this some minutes ago; after the upgrades I tried to
detach and then (after a reboot) to re-attach the token and I got this
answer:
Enabling default service esm-apps
Enabling default service esm-infra
Enabling default service livepatch
Canonical livepatch enabled.
Unexpected error(s) occurred.
For more details, see the log: /var/log/ubuntu-advantage.log
To file a bug run: ubuntu-bug ubuntu-advantage-tools

As you can see livepatch get enabled while esm-apps and esm-infra don't.

I've to say that lately I've had some problem (some broken dependencies)
with python and pip (causing nodejs malfunction) and I had to do some
reinstall but now all seems to work well.

I'll probably have to setup a new system and then migrate everything from
the old system to the new.

interesting... I am not sure how this would affect the results...

Could you please run
$ /usr/lib/apt/apt-helper download-file http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool /tmp/apthelper.tmp

and see
a) if this fails, and
b) post the output here?

I solved the problem: it was due to a corrupted language (locale) setting.
Though the system was showing the correct data I reset the locale variables
and then everything started working fine.

I contact you after over months because today I've solved my problem with
pro (ubuntu-advantage).
It was due to a corrupted language (locale) setting.
Though the system was showing the correct data I reset the locale variables
and then everything started working fine.
