Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

Regardless of whether the EULA should be shown in firefox or not, it should not be shown in abrowser.

That is pretty funny.
Abrowser was created because Firefox showed EULA, so it was created, not to show EULA. Yet it does...
Oh the irony...

Every good browser should show an EULA. Good developers first write the EULA, only after hack a software around it.

Hew McLachlan (hew) wrote :

You can't be serious.

If you love EULAs, use the branded firefox browser (bug #269656). The unbranded abrowser is not Mozilla's trademark, and it is a bug to display the EULA there.

This bug has already been triaged, and so further discussion is not necessary. We're just waiting on a fix.

this bug needs to be resolved in ubufox. reassigning.

For now lets target the fix for beta. anything before is too early - especially when considering that there are still too many uncertain variables in this equation. One dependency of this bug is clearly bug 269656 which deals with the general EULA business.

Why is there a browser called "abrowser" there any more, since Mozilla does not force us any more to show the EULA?

Hew McLachlan (hew) wrote :

I believe the EULA is still present in the latest Ubuntu version of Firefox. Even if it were removed, many users would prefer an unbranded browser since Firefox contains non-free artwork.

This bug is about the EULA in abrowser, so discussion about the inclusion of abrowser itself is not relevant here.

ubufox part is fixed. not sure if we really want abrowser to _not_ display the "Know your Rights..." notification. added task for firefox-3.0 accordingly again.

ubufox (0.6~b1-0ubuntu3) intrepid; urgency=low

  (cherry-pick rev 112 from lp:ubufox)
FREE-OF-CHARGE ON STARTUP; we backout the infamous firstrun feature
    (reverse apply rev 103)
    - update content/overlay.js
    - update defaults/preferences/ubufox.js
    - remove content/mozeula.html

  * fix LP: #272772: packages that Depend/Recommend/Suggest firefox
    (meta-package) must alternatively Depend/Recommend/Suggest abrowser
    - update debian/control

  (cherry-pick rev 113 from lp:ubufox)
  * set all translations for startup.homepage_override_url and
startup.homepage_welcome_url to about:blank; this prevents firstrun
    and milestone pages to appear
    - update locale/*/ubufox.properties

  (cherry-pick rev 114 from lp:ubufox)
  * HOMEPAGE_ONLINE now points to ubuntu 8.10 release startpage
    - update content/startpage.html

  (cherry-pick rev 115 from lp:ubufox)
  * dont make alternate plugin binding break flashblock; our
    bindings are not \!important anymore
    - update content/alternatePluginsBinding.css

I think it would be a good idea to remove the "Know your rights" part. Users switching from the firefox branding may be doing so with an expectation that they will not have Mozilla popups appearing anymore (even though this is much better than the previous situation). Most of the paragraphs in about:rights start with "Mozilla", and I can't see the benefit in having it around. I think an acceptable solution would be to leave about:rights accessible (in case abrowser users are interested), but remove the "Know your rights" part. This is how the situation was with firefox before Mozilla got involved, anyway.

This bug was fixed in the package firefox-3.0 - 3.0.2+build6+nobinonly-0ubuntu2

firefox-3.0 (3.0.2+build6+nobinonly-0ubuntu2) intrepid; urgency=low

  * fix LP: #273907 - abrowser does not start: :$pkglibdir/abrowser link
missing; we introduce the proper link in the firefox-3.0 package
    - update debian/rules
  * fix LP: #269795 - abrowser shouldn't display the EULA; we fix this by
using brand.properties to determine whether we have official branding or
not. In turn the about:rights notification only gets displayed when
    official build is running.
    - update debian/patches/lp269656_know_your_rights.patch
  * fix LP: #206191 - Firefox 3 "set as Desktop background" does not work
properly; we cherry-pick latest upstream patch from bugzilla
    - add debian/patches/bz421977_att334578.patch
    - update debian/patches/series
