Bug Description

When attempting to install 12.04 desktop i386 PP on a athlon XP 2200+ with 512MiB of RAM (there is swap partition on disk) and a Geforce 4 MX 440 and a 22GiB free partition, the installer crashes after the "Import account" wizard/page.

I have a 10.04 installation on another partition.
I have checked both the iso and the burned CD or the usb key I am using to perform the install. I am using ubuntu-12.04-desktop-i386.iso

I proceed to the different step of the installer without problem. I could even wait it copies all the files, and then proceed through the other step

And only when I click continue at the import account page, whether I select the displayed account or not, the installer disappears from screen (I am assuming it crashes) (after showing the right arrow of the ending diaporama I am guessing)

I am guessing either it is because of the import account wizzard, or the diaporama, or another operation performed at that moment

I performed a total of at least 5 installations, with CD or USB, in french, in english, changing various option, with or without wifi enabled and it's always crashing at the same place.

Same problem here, occurring at exactly the same point of the install on a Sempron 2400+, ATI 9200SE with open source driver, and 2GB ram.
I have tried installing from live session and direct from the first menu; same problem with both methods.
ISO file md5sum checks out OK as does the burned DVD when checked from the first DVD menu.

I have one disk in system with 10.04 running with no problems, using a 10GB / partition, 140GB /home and 2GB swap, and until today had 4 other partitions on a second disk with Ubuntu 11.10, Xubuntu 11.10, Lubuntu 11.10 and Bodhi 1.4.0, all with data files linked from the 10.04 home to their own root partition's /home folder. Now the Ubuntu 11.10 has been blown away by this attempt to install 12.04, not a disaster as it was just a test partition, but I want to install 12.04 to see what all the fuss is about.

I would like to confirm crash after "importing account" toward the end of the installation process.
I have 5 fail installation.

My hardware is Hp Dv1729TU (dv1000 series)

The first installation of 12.04 is ok.

The later installations in the another partition always display existing partitions, and ask if we want to import the settings.
I always did not check or choose any account.

But it always report problems with importing and stop with successful installation note. (But in fact it is not).

I installed Ubuntu 10.04 after that to see if it is my machine or what.
Ubuntu 10.04 and Fedora 17 installation are perfect.

Try 12.04 2 more times, the same issue.

I have test more installation,
got 2 syslog attached one on 23 July (I will include 17 July next post)

I had screen shorts recorded the error pages too, if the Gurus need to see.
(I got that when I try to install from booted sda3 12.04 to my sda12 as a second ubuntu 12.04 in my note book.

It report migration-assistant cannot unmounted sda3,
I have to click go back button,
it will exit the installation at this point and report error while migrating data
(though I did not click the sda3 for import at all, and always)

Then it gave successful installation and ask us to reboot.
It fail to reinstall grub, so you will end up with old grub menu.
================

I found work around this grub update error by

1. Installing Boot Repair in the USB live and use Boot Repair to update Grub that has option to boot into new "fail" Unbuntu 12.04 installation.

2. I boot into existing "Good" Ubuntu partition and use Grub Customiser to write to MBR the new update with new"fail" Ubuntu 12.04 installation (Boot Repair did not allow us to update grub, it told me to do the no.1 so I did that successfully)

The "fail" ubuntu 12.04 after this work around perform well with no sign of crippled Ubuntu.
I can install many other programs including Epson TX series and use it perfectly.
Wifi function ok.
I would say 100% working.

Update 28 july 2012
New Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS (built 20120727) solve this bug.
I have tested new 12.04.01 LTS in the same environment as 12.04 LTS.
No menu come up for "migrating of your old account" at all,
so no issue for that bug.

Great work,
that is worth while for me to spend days to identified this bug.
I will be testing Quantal after this post.
