Bug Description

Lubuntu ubiquity crash and disappear while "copying files" leaving normal desktop running.
Lucid lynx installs fine no problem copying files.
Lubuntu Alpha 1 installs fine, can then update to beta 2 requires copying thousands (!) of files works fine. No problem at all with copying files.

Ubiquity destroys grub2 configuration before copying files, and does not restore grub2 configuration until install completes which of course cannot happen because install failed. Ubiquity design has no plan for recovery if install fails.

I'll attempt boot repair this is a triple boot a Lucid Lynx a luuntu 12.04 updated to Beta, and the partition install was using.

I was able to repair grub2 successfully (Yay!) by following the instructions in this URL

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-Repair

Loaded boot-repair into the Live Cd and it ran just fine. Takes a while to download boot-repari and run, but much much quicker than instlling Lucid Lynx. Highly recommended.

However Bug #973608 is still present and cannot install lubuntu 12.04 Beta 2 final on this pc short of installing Alpha and updating (oof!).

thanks jerry. I'm a little new so please kindly explain a few things.
how did you launch the beta 2 install process?

Is this hardware related? I don't understand what you mean when you said it "copying files" leaving normal desktop running

did you by any chance install to a non-empty partition?

I check "format" when selecting the partition so ubiquity formats the the partition and then sets it up, copies files, ....

Live CD is doing "try ubuntu" with a desktop, terminal, internet access, .... then select the provided icon to do an install. It's an application. The rest of the live CD keeps on running. Install works fine this way with 10.04, 10.10, 11.04, 11.10, 12.04 Alpha.

Whee.

http://www.supergrubdisk.org/super-grub2-disk/

A 2 mb .iso hybrid file, just format a usb to F32 I use gparted

Download the .iso in nothing flat it's only 2 mb

sudo dd if=super_grub2_disk_hybrid_1.99b1.iso of=/dev/sdb oflag=direct bs=1048576

zoom writes a 2 mb file into a flash memory instantly

Then choose to boot the usb

Blink it's booted, select all operating systems

Pow boots up regardless of how garbaged Pangolin did to Grub2.

Instant boot, no messing around with boot-repair etc.

Still getting this bug gets a little farther then ubiquity window disappears.
See Bug #978489 where ubiquity window disappears "about the same time" the second slideshow image should appear. Copy continues to completion in the background but install isn't done so it won't work.
