Bug Description

Binary package hint: ubiquity

Hi,

I installed Ubuntu the third time on a Benq JoyBook 5100 U with Windows XP preinstalled.

history:
(The first time the installation frose, due to CD errors(checksum appeared to be wrong later), the second time the installation run to completion , but on booting I got the error 'hard disk boot sector invalid', I could boot from the live CD, then boot from harddisk, enter the grub and boot Ubuntu and XP. Only switching from one OS to another caused each OS to crash on the first try. I tried to reinstall Windows, which does not work. Then I deleted the Ubuntu partitions, and started to reinstall Ubuntu.)

I chose the option to create space automatically, using existing free space. My installer crashed, with the request to add the 3 pieces of info below.

Apart from your efforts to correct the bug, could I also ask for some advise how to solve the problem at hand? I try to install Ubuntu without erasing all my data, although I have good backups.

greetings, Mark

Thanks for your report. The amount of free space you had isn't sufficient to install Ubuntu (the fact that it didn't tell you this is also bug 48355). I suggest using manual partitioning to shrink some of your existing partitions to make more room.
