Bug Description

on upgrade from 10.04 LTS 2 to 11.10, install bar is about 15% of the way on copying when it crashes. upon restart and the kernel appears to be 11.10 but the graphic sticks on "Waiting for network configuration" , "Waiting up to 60 seconds more for network", as in #858122.

in the casper dump, it shows that dbus is failing to connect:

dbus.exceptions.DBusException: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.FileNotFound: Failed to connect to socket /var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket: No such file or directory

this looks like it's related to the migration from /var/run -> /run and /var/lock -> /run/lock. i tried to manually create the symlinks as per previous bugs, i.e. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/dbus/+bug/811441/comments/9 to no avail.

(NB: i couldn't recover into single-user mode either to apply these changes so i booted from 11.10 install media)

no VMware involved.

The dbus message is a red herring. I think this has the same underlying cause as bug 891711.
