Thanks for reporting this bug and any supporting documentation. Since this bug has enough information provided for a developer to begin work, I'm going to mark it as confirmed and let them handle it from here.

I can confirm this crash on hardware. To reproduce:

1. download the Xubuntu oneiric-desktop-i386.iso
2. burn to cd or install in VirtualBox
3. after entering name, password, etc, hit continue
4. observe the install appears to proceed normally.
5. Message on screen that ubiquity crashed

Thanks for taking the time to make Ubuntu better!

This bug was fixed in the package ubiquity - 2.8.3

---------------
ubiquity (2.8.3) oneiric; urgency=low

  * Skip LTSP from the list of networks to copy to the target.
This is a temporary network created by Edubuntu's LTSP live.
  * Fix PROXY url as the gsettings host key already contains http://
  * Only disable set the gsettings keys once in gtk_ui (LP: #657086)
  * Properly handle keys in gsettings that are empty/not set.
  * Don't crash when the no-proxy list is empty. (LP: #867620)
  * Clear the console just before killing X in ubiquity-dm. (LP: #813065)

The bug is still present in the Oneiric x64 daily build as of 2011-10-09. The installer crashes when showing "importing user settings" even if it is a fresh install.

I have been unable to reproduce this issue using the Xubuntu Oneiric Ocelot ISO images dated 2011-10-09. Perhaps you would be able to provide more details, such as:

Which image exactly?
What partition method?
Did you check "download updates" or "Install 3rd party software"?
Language?
Keyboard?

Thanks for the information. Can you try this with the images dated 2011-10-10? They will be available shortly.

Also, Can you tell us if you are experiencing this issue on real hardware or in a virtual machine? What VM ? If hardware, what are you specifications?

I will try as soon as I get back home from work. If you need any more
information, I'll provide it as soon as possible.

This bug is NOT fixed. I have exactly the same problem. I am using the latest ISO of regular ubuntu (not Xubuntu).

My hardware is quite different, the only thing I have in common with the above reporter is that I also have an "advanced partitioning" scheme (i.e. I set it up manually, since I like to have separate /boot, /home and / partitions, and I don't want ubuntu to delete my windows partitions and my backup partitions).

Since this bug was against the Xubuntu cd specifically, it is fixed. If you are experiencing a similar bug using the Ubuntu images or CD, please file a new bug report after starting a live session (boot with the CD in the drive, choose "Try Ubuntu". You open a terminal, and type 'ubuntu-bug ubiquity' without the quotes. This will file a bug report and include the log files required. Also please give the following information in the description of the bug report:

Which image exactly?
What partition method?
Did you check "download updates" or "Install 3rd party software"?
Language?
Keyboard?
Date of the cd you are using?

Thank you very much for helping improve Ubuntu.
