Most of this is due to a bus error encountered due to errors apparently produced while communicating with the hard disk. This is often due to a faulty hard disk, and at any rate isn't an installer bug as such. It may help to check whether the hard disk is old and in need of replacement, or to move the system to a cooler environment.

That said, ubiquity's poor response to this event is bug 69470.

Thanks for the info, as it happens the hard drive was faulty. I replaced
it and installed Xubuntu 6.06 with no problems at all.

well, I had already got ubuntu installed but there was some mess ups and i
got ubuntu 6.06 lts and now it works great.
