Thanks for your report. Looks like you've tried to install ubuntu on sda5, which partman claims is an ntfs partition. Could you describe the steps you used, what you were trying to do?

Changed in ubiquity:
status: Unconfirmed → Needs Info

I was trying to install ubuntu 6.10 from a disc my friend gave me.

1. tried to manually select partitions, kept saying the root was not assigned to a partition.
2. tried that once more and after it rebooted , but still , the boot was not assigned,
3. then tried to use default command to select largest free memory space.
4. had to go to sleep and woke up to the error message the the installer crashed.
5. my friend had the same problem with the disk, so we figured it was a bum disk.

Do you still have the disc so ewe can check it's integrity? There is an option for that at the fist boot screen.

I ask because this looks more like a HD write error than a CD read one. And if it is indeed trying to use the NTFS partition it should be followed up further.

Thanks for your report. I'm afraid that one of your partitions seems to be too small to complete an Ubuntu desktop installation successfully. Bug 48355 notes that the partitioner should have warned you about this. This is fixed in 6.06.1.
