Unable to update Dapper -> Edgy via Install CD (Feature Request)

Bug Description

Something that is currently quite annoying to me is the fact that the install cd cannot be used to upgrade a Dapper system to Edgy. I'm aware that the alternate cd is required to do this, but I cannot see the sense in having to download an entire new .iso just to upgrade my Dapper system when I have already downloaded the base install of Edgy in the past aka the Install CD.

Please, reinstate the ability to upgrade from the install cd. It hopefully should be a trivial task (every Debian based distro I have ever used has this ability) and it would make both my and I'm sure many others lives much easier. Having to download 500mb of packages or a new .iso that contains software we have already downloaded just seems like a waste to me.

If you are wondering why I don't just do a fresh install, the answer is that the installer is so slow on my 1ghz 512mb ram laptop that I'd almost be better off downloading the alternate .iso and doing it that way (text based installer fallback? I'll log another feature request for that).

Wrong guess :)

@ Robert:

It is not a trivial task. The software on the live cd is already installed. So there are nearly no packages on the live cd. You would have to repack all packages.

I don't know if there are any other distros that allow you to install from the desktop/live cd. Like all Debian based distros we also provide a cd, the alternate one, that comes with the packages and the text based Debian installer.

No, I don't wonder why you don't do a fresh install. Upgrading is a key feature of Ubuntu.

Cheers,

Sebastian

This is impossible to implement on a CD. As Sebastian said above, the live CD has everything unpacked, so there is no information about packages and on how to upgrade them.
You should do an upgrade using the update-manager or download an alternate cd or a DVD image which is a combo live/alternate disc.
