I can confirm this for Natty (daily image 2011-03-25).

I've did this (write in terminal):
gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

Change this line:
"deb cdrom:[Ubuntu 11.04 _Natty Narwhal_ - Alpha i386 (20110325)]/ natty main restricted"
to:
"deb cdrom:/ natty main restricted"

Rob,

Even if you use a usb-stick the live sesion would create a virtual /cdrom. Did you use Ubuntu 11.04 or 10.10? Maybe it would help if you would attach to the bug report the /var/log/syslog file.

Please ignore my previous comment. I think my bug might be different though.

In my syslog of the live session, after doing the installation, there was something like this:

Mar 25 15:26:02 ubuntu apt-setup: W: Skipping nonexistent file /cdrom/dists/natty/main/binary-i386/Packages
Mar 25 15:26:02 ubuntu apt-setup: W: Skipping nonexistent file /cdrom/dists/natty/restricted/binary-i386/Packages
....(other related errors)....

Hi,

Thanks for reply I did try what you suggested but I'm running it on the pendrve
 - how do I get the bug report file? after it fails to install I can only run Ubuntu from the pendrive.

I was using 10.10 in both cases, desktop and then pendrive. I did try 10.4 desktop and same problem

Regards
Rob.

If you have an Internet connection on the live session, *after* the installer crashes, you can easily send the files by running this command "apport-collect 741217" (ALT+F2 to type it). More about bug reporting: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs

By the way, did you use the Universal USB Installer under Windows? I also found this bug #658865, maybe it's the same.
