Bug Description

I was attempting to install this distro on a rather small hard disk (~2gb). There did not appear to be any size checking before the installation. During the install, I received a message that 100% of the target disk was being used, then received the following messages:

Sorry for the bugmail noise -- I marked this as a duplicate of 48355 but see now that there was a fix for that in version earlier than the one you are using.

Did you get any warning about disk space before the install started?

I had same problem when tried to install to 2Gb root and 512Mb swap. No warning before install started.

Sorry, it is indeed a duplicate of #48355, which has not yet been fixed.

I am new to Ubuntu. I have tried to install Ubuntu half a dozen times. Each time the installer crashes with a cryptic message which when decoded by looking at each partition means it ran out of disk space on some partition. It does not tell me how much it wants. I fiddle the partition sizes with Boot-It NG and try again and the same thing happens over and over. I had the impression Linux was tiny enough to fit on a floppy or CD. I guess I was way off base.

PLEASE, before the install starts copying files, check the free space in the partitions and complain saying how much more space is needed in each partition so you can get it right the next go. i.e. complain about ALL tight partitions at once. If this would upset the purists, just make it a warning message. Also factor in a reasonable growth. The process of tinkering and reinstalling in SOOO tedious.

I would also like the installer to optionally avoid the Grub boot manager. It seems Ubuntu installs it whether you like it or not. I had some very bad experiences with it earlier.

This bug still exists now in 2008 with the latest version (7.10).

I tried to install on a partition where I already had version 4.10 working. I didn't realize I now needed 4 GB of space. The install seemed to go fine--no error messages. But when I tried to reboot, GRUB failed. It took me a long time to realize that the install had used up the whole partition and hadn't finished--so in particular it didn't install GRUB properly.

Obviously someone with more experience would have figured out what was wrong more quickly, but we want Ubuntu to be easy to use even for newcomers.
