I'm installing from an USB stick.

Off topic, I then tried the Kubuntu alt cd todays build 2/24 . The text based installer got stuck could not locate the CDROM... well yap i'm installing from USB... I guess I will download a 3rd ISO today.

unetboot and also use the usbcreator to load latest build onto 2 usb sticks

during install I'm always getting a freeze when going from Prepare -> to Disk Setup
I tried two different computer systems and 2 different usbsticks. So im out of ideas..

top shows ubiquity using about 2% of my cpu so it seems some thread is likely running but never finishing causing it to block.
i then ubiquity -b... checked logs... I then thought I would try and run this partman

sudo partman... the loading bar never finished and echo an error
tman/init.d/03kernelmodles_basicfilesystems: 80 udpkg not found.. well i give up for now, be nice to see this working

Still getting endless hang on 26 Feb 2011 07:21:48 Daily Build

Happens where install is trying to determine the partition structure

Occurs with or without USB hard drive plugged in

Occurs with both "Try Ubuntu, selecting install"
and with "Install Ubuntu" without trying it first.

Using USB stick because image is over 700 MB.

Jerry, thanks for creating this bug report. There is a topic on the forum on this :
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1692326

Apparently no one uses daily-live ISO's to install for some reason. Not much reply's to ubiquity hanging up.

I also tried todays [20110226] with the same results.

From the Natty forum:

VMC posts:

I think this is the culprit here that's causing all our troubles. Prior to this change ubiquity worked. From natty changes:

Code:

ubiquity (2.5.18) natty; urgency=low

  * Automatic update of included source packages: partman-auto
    93ubuntu6.

Date: Thu, 24 Feb 2011 17:54:41 -0600

VMC also posts: Also from natty changes, I don't see any activity for ubiquity.

Any way to back this change off to what it was before 24 Feb?

Thanks, Jerry

I can't install Natty since the last weeks because of this bug. It doesn't matter if I use Ubuntu Live, Ubunt Alternate or Xubuntu and it doesn't matter, which PC I use.

If I try to install from the Live CD (just in install mode) the installer hangs a while when he should load the partitioner. After a few minutes the installer crashes and Ubuntu boot's into live mode. If I try to install in live mode the installer hangs endless if he try's to load the partitioner.

There fixing or upgrading many other issues, but unless we can install, what's the use?!

Ubiquity just hangs, and there is nothing is the log files or home folder to indicate anything wrong.

Here the same, always hanging up while installing from usbStick. The terminal showed that it was waiting for the CD-rom. After I killed that. Ubuntu was able to boot. i then used apt-get to upgrade the system. A day later it booted up without Unity. Only the background picture and telling it was missing compiz. I opened a terminal and apt-get install unity and compiz brought it , after downloading a few hunderd MB back to live.

I am afraid I miss programs or librarys because the ubs install went wrong. I tried 3 stick and two pc's.
By the way, making the 11.04 iso usb sticks also ended in a hanging application (from 10.10) so i thought it was only my problem but now it looks like I am not the only one

OK, its now fixed. You need to download the latest ISO, from today, 20110228, timed at 11:04PM.

There was an update to the earlier ISO timed at 7.25AM.

This also fixes a scrambled display I been having.

Yes, mark the bug as fixed. The second iso from today had ubiquity 2.5.19 which worked.

From the USB stick, the Unity 3D "Applications" hung up. Wouldn't work at all. I started a terminal and from command line issued "synaptic" then did a search on ubiquity and verified the 2.5.19 level.

Thanks much, all.

Without delving into this issue very deeply at all, I can say that it appears to be consistently reproducible on my test box (real hardware) if these are any pre-existing partitions on the target drive. When I make use of an unpartitoned drive (with or without an existing MBR + empty partition table) Natty Alpha3 will install fine. However any pre-existing partitions on the target drive will hang the partitioner. I primarily use the alternate iso, however I seem to get similar results on the desktop iso as well.

If you are experiencing this bug with the absolute latest daily-live CD, please do the following:
 - Boot the CD and press "Try Ubuntu".
 - Edit /lib/partman/lib/base.sh and put "set -x" on the second line.
 - Open a terminal and run "ubiquity -d".
 - Proceed through the installer until it hangs, at which point run "apport-collect 723990"
 - Also attach the output of "ps auxf" to this bug report once the installer is hanging.

Thanks!
