ubiquity crashed with AttributeError in reset_locale() - iMac

Maverick AMD64 on 24inch iMac - install or try window appeared but cursor was busy and remained so.
After some time I clicked on try with the busy mouse pointer though no changes occured over a few minutes.

I eventually clicked the close window button and confirmed I wished to close the installer and was then booted to the desktop of the 'Try Ubuntu' feature.
