Installer Crashes REPEATEDLY "Unable to install GRUB in (hd0)"

Bug Description

This has happened six times so far, even when I completely wipe and repartition the disk for Win98 (FAT32) and try yet again to reinstall Dapper. It is a long time to wait every time for it to fail. It looks like a lot of users have this problem - not to mention all those with less patience who flick ubuntu and look for something that works.

We're sorry; the installer crashed. Please file a bug report at https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+filebug and a developer will attend to the problem as soon as possible. To help the developers understand what went wrong, include the following detail in your bug report, and attach the files /var/log/installer/syslog, /var/log/syslog, and /var/log/partman:Traceback (most recent call last):

  File "/usr/bin/ubiquity", line 130, in ?

This is due to problems reading from the CD. You apparently didn't attach the full /var/log/syslog, but no matter, because this doesn't happen on working CDs:

Sep 17 12:55:00 ubuntu grub-installer: /sbin/grub-install: line 391: //sbin/grub: cannot execute binary file

I suggest burning the CD at a lower speed (if applicable) and cleaning the CD drive lens with the sort of cleaning kit you can get at electronics shops; then perform a CD integrity check before starting the install again.

First of all, this is not Ubiquity bug at all, it happened to me several times when installing by d-i.

Also I disagree it has anything to do with the quality of cd-media, it happened to me several times in a row, until I repartitioned the disk, after that it was flawless every time afterwards.

Oh yes, exactly the same was happening with LILO.
