This problem seems fixed now after a few lots of reboots.
It seems that whenever the Live starts with my ppc NOT connected to a valid network, I get a few errors about gnome and daemon and it's settings. However when Live starts while hooked up to a valid network, it starts fine and the installer starts fine as well.

The problem is that your system clock is set to a bogus value (probably something in 1904) during boot. This is also bug 57952.
