ummm... funny thing that and sorry to be a bother about it all. turns out
the crash was probably a consequence of not having an active internet
connection. after attempting the install a couple of times without success I
finally figured it out. Ubuntu, Kubuntu and Mandriva don't make it easy for
pppoe using neo-luddites like myself to get hooked up to the Internet.
Nevertheless, I would have thought that the install program at some point
would have realised that there was indeed no internet connection and have
informed the user or some such, rather than just crashing like that...
ennyways... everything is up and running now. BTW, the only reason I sent
the bug report in was because the error screen that showed up said to do so.

Don't worry, you're not being a bother :-) On the contrary, you're helping improve Ubuntu! Can you please reproduce the problem and attach the files I requested above? They are vital to tracking down and fixing the problem.

It seems unlikely to me that this crash has anything to do with whether there's an active network connection of any kind.
