Requested files are attached. I will attempt to install manually with debootstrap but I have more HDDs around to play with should the need arise.

Few things set this apart from a regular system:
 * The drive is hdb, not hda.
 * I partitioned manually (actually in the previous [i386] OS) leaving a large chunk of space with part. id bf - Solaris - which I plan on playing with Eventually(tm). Ubiquity was instructed to reformat all the partitions however and hdb1 (/) is set as active.
 * For some reason the emu10k1 card is not noticed. This is probably a BIOS thing.
 * CPU is dual-core.

--------------------

Uh OK the files are not attached but they're included. Huge, although it's easier to just include them en masse:

Thanks for your report. Due to some reliability problems with GRUB and XFS, you need to use a non-XFS root filesystem or create a non-XFS /boot filesystem. The fact that the partitioner doesn't warn you about this up-front is also bug 47848, and is fixed in dapper-updates.

OK, fine, this is something I remember Sarge suffering from but:

mking@knight:~$ mount|egrep '(boot|/ )'
/dev/hdb1 on / type xfs (rw)

With no problems once grub is in place. There may have been trouble
getting it in place and I had to run the grub shell manually. I can't
remember now. If there were I would have put them down to the fact that
I'm leaving hda in place for an i386 chroot.

I must take issue with the term "a mere child," for it has been my
invariable experience that the company of a mere child is infinitely
preferable to that of a mere adult.
