Hi, new install on my computer today, and same crash, same message. (with / in xfs filesystem)

So I try to configure / with ext3 and /home part with xfs, and no crash ...

I think / or /boot as to be configured with ext2 or ext3 file systeme and not with xfs.

Hi, glad to see you found a solution.

In the end i abandoned the live install CD and downloaded the alternate install disk which worked a charm. Think i may have needed to install lilo first then grub later on (for one reason or another i ended up doing that).

Strangely grub-install locks up pretty much every time i run it but it eventually it went right and i now have a nice grub boot loader with splash screen, xfs root and all... :)

Does making /boot an ext2 partition (with / as xfs) let you install with the live cd? If it does i guess thats a pretty good work around... Nice to have a separate /boot anyway i suppose.

OK looks like this problems definitely a grub + xfs /boot thing, it's been observed and confirmed in debian bug reports:

re: http://bugs.debian.org/243835

-----
The debian installer can install a system with / or /boot on XFS. When
it tries to install grub on such a system, the grub-install run hangs,
seemingly forever. The last thing output is "Probing devices to guess
BIOS drives." The cpu is pegged too. This has been reproduced on more
than one machine, and I found something that looked like the same
problem on google. I've seen it with both the 2.4.25 and 2.6.5 kernels.

We have put a guard in d-i to deal with this, it warns users that XFS
/boot (or root) will not work with grub. This is not an ideal solution,
users want to use XFS for these partitions.

Perhaps something similar should be done here?

Indeed, that analysis is correct. This is also bug 47848, and it's fixed in 6.06.1.
