Bug Description

I've been having no luck loading any flavor of linux on my new Dell i1764:

Inspiron 1764
Intel Core i5
M430 2.27GHz
4 GB Ram
Onboard Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD
Currently running Win 7 Pro

Apparently, the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD is not supported in linux.
At the suggestion of manishmahabir on Ubuntu Forums I tried loading the
Lucid Lynx Alpha 3 live cd that downloaded and burned to a CD on Feb 23 2010.

It booted into full screen resolution (I heard the login sound, too) but he machine
locked as soon as I tried to pull down a menu

I was able to install Karmic using safe graphics mode from Live CD then re-installed X-server to get correct resolution, but Compiz does not work. Locks up on cursor movement or menu drop down.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. I have classified this bug as a bug in ubiquity.

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the appropriate application's "Help -> Report a Problem" menu or using 'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we can't fix it because your description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read "How to report bugs effectively" http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem. We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures.
At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

I think it is that Ubuntu does not have a hardware driver for the Intel Integrated HD Graphics Card in the Dell 1764. Even though I was able to make things work on Karmic, the graphics still stall sometimes until I move the mouse. I had to use "Safe Graphics Mode" to even get it to install with Karmic. It would not display the proper resolution for a 17" monitor. Compiz is what locks up the computer.

Beta and RC of Lucid both installed fine on the Dell 1764, just to provide you an update. Whatever the problem, it has been resolved. It was very new hardware at the time this bug was initially filed by other user.
