The crash occurred while I was selecting my keyboard layout. About 20 seconds after the crash, I was logged out of gnome, although I was able to immediately log back in.
Before the crash, I was having graphical artifacts on the screen (using vesa driver). After logging back in, the artifacts disappeared.
