Been doing a bit of searching and noticed this is a known bug ( https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/47848 ). Missing from my original report is the key bit of data - I was installing on XFS. Can't safely add a separate boot partition so I'll have to use JFS or ext3 (why no Reiser support any more?).

I'm sure I saw Reiser support when I was installing the other day. But what is it you mean that you can't safely add a separate boot partition? That's how I got around the XFS crashy-crashy (I used ext2, don't need a journal on something that's rarely updated) and it worked fine.

I couldn't see any Reiser support, or I'd have used that - I did download the image a few days ago, if that makes any difference (doubt it - seems a bit of a major change for a point release?).

The reason I can't (or rather won't) add a separate boot partition is nothing to do with Ubuntu - it's because I have two other OS installs on this machine which I can't risk destroying, so I'm not going to monkey around resizing partitions.

I've now successfully installed on JFS - hangs starting X, but I don't know why yet. No time to investigate tonight and a separate issue that doesn't belong on this bug report.
