The installer requested that you attach /var/log/syslog, /var/log/installer/syslog and /var/log/partman to the bug report. Please do so, using the `Add Attachment' link to the left.

Apparently this is the known xfs/grub issue. This is a major showstopper, and it seemed to happen even when I tried again using the default ext3 setup. Trying again with / xfs and /boot ext2.

Yes, this is the known issue. /boot ext2 (first partition) and / xfs (second partition), and a 1gb swap partition as 3rd partition installed fine.

Indeed, this is a known issue, although not quite the bug you claimed while marking as a duplicate. See http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DapperReleaseNotes/UbiquityKnownIssues; I am doing my best to warn people, although there's a limited amount I can do until we roll a point release ...
