Harumph.

$ sudo grub-install --root-directory=/target /dev/hda
Probing devices to guess BIOS drives. This may take a long time.
The file /target/boot/grub/stage1 not read correctly.

I tried update/upgrade, then redo the grub-install, but to no avail:

Matthew McEachen (mrm-ubuntu) wrote : WORKAROUND!

I rebooted into xfce, opened a terminal and editted /etc/apt/sources.list to include:

deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-updates main restricted

I then did

$ sudo aptitude update
$ sudo aptitude upgrade

THEN launched the installer (and chose reiserfs this time instead of xfs as the single mega-partition type). The installer worked without a hitch this time.

Thanks for your report. Due to some reliability problems with GRUB and XFS, you need to use a non-XFS root filesystem or create a non-XFS /boot filesystem. Bug 47848 is filed to note that the partitioner should warn you about this up-front.
