Crashed on HP Pavilion ze4560us laptop with a new 60 GB hard drive (ordered from Comptick, not sure of the manufacturer.) The old installer (from versions 5.04 and 5.10) believes the hard drive has 9007.4 TB of space (clearly it does not), but BIOS reads the hard drive correctly with 60010 MB. Ubiquity reads 60 GB, but crashes, even when using guided installation. The crash always occurs at around 23-26% completion while trying to copy files to the hard drive.

Ok, I'm now beginning to think the problem is not specific to ubiquity. In particular, I downloaded the alternate installation disc and gave it a whir. I get a screen full of warnings at the beginning of the text based install that there is an I/O error and it can't write to /dev/hda. Then, the installer boots up as though nothing were wrong. When I get to the partition step, it reads my hard drive correctly this time as 60 GB (the manufacturer is listed as DOCHIBA MK&0#4GAH) and I am able to partition my disc both manually and with guided partitioning. However, after it creates an ext3 file system on /, it cannot mount the hard drive and the installation fails. So...I'm not entirely sure how to fix this problem, but it looks like ubiquity is not the source.

I got the same error message when trying to install 6.06 on a Apple PowerBook G4. The installer installed everything fine, but when it got to the point of installing Yaboot, there was an error diolog that came up stating that the boot loader could not be installed, then I got the same message you got. I have an 80 GB hard drive that is partitioned for 60 GB OS X, 15 GB for linux. My Ubuntu partition is Ext2, and my OS X partition is HFS+(journaled). I really have no idea what the problem may be, as this is my first attempt to install Ubuntu, or any Linux for that matter. As a side note, I have the last revision PowerBook, right befor the MacBook Pros came out.

I had reformatted my hard drive on an older 86x (@2000). I downloaded/burned Live CD. Ubuntu loaded fine from the CD, but the installer would not open, or would ask for a password, or would tell me I didn't have privileges for it. I rebooted, rebooted, rebooted. Finally installer started, then crashed w/ above message.

I love what little I've experienced of Ubuntu: not sure what to try next to get it installed.

OH, John, I can't!!! I was working with a reformated drive, so I reformated again, reinstalled, from the Live CD, got all the way to 97% when it hung, so I cancelled, BUT it had installed to the hard drive! I was soooooooooo sooooooooo excited when it opened, only to be plunged in the depths of despair when it would not accept the user - password I gave it. (And it was the correct user-password, too!) Sigh. I wiped the drive again, and when my XP install crashed . . .

I installed, of all things, Windows 98, just to run the un-linuxed scanner I have, and I've downloaded the alternate install for Ubuntu, which I'm going to dual install this weekend. I'm having fun learning this coding business, but I've got a ways to go - been printing lots of pages!!!!

Thanks so much!!!!

Jill

I've gotten the same error bessage as reported above.

I was using an original CD received from Ubuntu; I first checked for MD5 sums and it was OK.

The target machine is a Pentium III, 550 MHz, with a 13.5 GB Segate hard drive.

It seems I cannot attach more than one file.

Here is the /var/log/syslog:

Sorry I haven't got to this email until now, but I have been pretty
busy with stuff lately. Actually, after a few tries of installing
Ubuntu, all the data on my backup drive was corrupted beyond repair,
and I lost everything. After that, I have since not tried to
reinstall Ubuntu, and will probably not do so until I get a new
computer with multiple hard drives.

Annie: Thanks for your report. I'm afraid that one of your partitions seems to be too small to complete an Ubuntu desktop installation successfully. Bug 48355 notes that the partitioner should have warned you about this.

Jill, Bob: Both of your problems (definitely Bob's, possibly Jill's since that's a bizarre segmentation fault in something that has no reason to crash in that way) look to be problems reading from the CD; unfortunately some of the underlying kernel code doesn't deal with read errors terribly gracefully. My first reaction would be to check that the CD and the drive are clean (I've had good results with off-the-shelf cleaning kits) and to try burning the CD at a lower speed.

Colin,

The partition on my hard drive is 60 GB, more than enough space to install Ubuntu. Moreover, I've tried doing the install with the auto partitioner as well as by manually partitioning the hard drive, and I've tried using both the standard install cd and the alternate install cd. I used Debian unstable for 3 years and never encountered a problem like this so I have to admit that I'm a little frustrated now that you are writing my problem off so quickly, especially after I posted this bug 3 months ago! I know you are all very busy and I appreciate the work you are doing, but shouldn't installer bugs be more of a priority?
