Ubuntu 6.06 installer crashed...

I tried to install over an existing Ubuntu 5.10 partition, without formatting.

Thanks for your report. You must reformat the / filesystem to install from the Desktop CD; this is also bug 47046. For an upgrade from Ubuntu 5.10, however, I strongly recommend following the directions in http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DapperUpgrades instead, as there is no need to reinstall.
