I found the problem last night. After running
QTParted outside of the installer, I saw that it was
XFS that was causing the problem. When I switched to
EXT3, the installer moved forward.

OK, thanks; that's bug 47848. You should also be able to create just a non-XFS /boot filesystem to get around the problem.
