Bug Description

Binary package hint: ubiquity

I booted from a USB stick created with usb-creator on a Hardy Heron computer from an
karmic-desktop-i386.iso with md5sum eb1cd70846f853aa0c4072b0ce1eb392.. "Test memory" reports no errors.

When I select "Install Kubuntu" and press return, nothing on screen changes for 8 seconds. Then the "Kubuntu" logo appears for a time (with the flickering problem described in bug 458739), then the screen goes black. Sometimes the screen stays black. Sometimes the "Welcome" installer screen appears, and sometimes the screen goes back to black some time after showing the
"Wecome" screen for a while.

Once the Live KDE desktop is running, the graphics are fine. It's just the installer and boot process that have trouble.

If I switch away from the virtual terminal and back with Ctrl-Alt-F1 Ctrl Alt-F7, the welcome screen reappears. The other virtual terminals just display static, so I haven't been able to get to /var/log/syslog or /var/log/partman yet.

The computer is Dell Latitude D600 with a ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9000 graphics chip.

The attachments to bug 458739 may be useful.

This sounds a lot like the symptoms of bug 457858. Can you please re-test with an image containing Ubiquity 2.0.3 or later? Basically any image "after" the RC.

I retried with Kubuntu Deskop i386 20091026.1. Dpkg -l says the live system has ubiquity 2.0.4.
I started installing twice, but didn't go past the keyboard selection screen either time.
In both cases, the installer screen appeared properly, and the other virtual terminals did not display static.
So far, so good!
