Bug Description

Release: LTS Beta 2
Hardware: Dell Latitude D800

I download & burned the Ubuntu 6.06 LTS Dapper Drake Beta 2 live cd. Boots up fine. Choose install. At this point the installer already shows some bugs, crashing after the location/time page, then after the username page. Finally it gets to the partition page. I choose manual. It correctly sees my Win2k and FC4 partitions. I leave all partitions in tact. Next page it correctly suggest that / should go into my /dev/hda5 and swap into /dev/hda6. I hit install.

It starts loading the partition program half way during the reformat of /dev/hda5 dies. No messages. Nothing but a return tot the GNOME desktop.
In sequence:

Please wait
|||||||||||||||||||||||||| 15 %
Creating ext file system for / in partition in /dev/hda5.

Then the system hangs for about 20 sec.
It then says 'Starting Partioning', briefly and dissapears.

I happy to provide more info if some tells what debugging features can be switched on. Right now, I seem to be left with a destroyed FC4 partition and no Ubuntu....
Less than impressing.

Cheers

Gertjan

Beta 2 is quite old already and has known bugs. Please try the latest
daily live cd.

Run it from the terminal with:

UBIQUITY_DEBUG=1
sudo ubiquity

And if it fails, attach /var/log/installer/syslog
and /var/log/installer/partman

Please use a throwaway password when being asked for it by the
installer, since it will be present in these logs.

This bug is exactly the same as bug #39734, so I made it a duplicate. According to the ubuntu-annouce mailing list ( https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-announce/2006-May/000080.html ), it was fixed in flight 7, so you should try flight 7 or the latest daily dapper iso.

I had exactly the same problem (it also crashed at 15%) with beta 1 & 2 and was glad to hear that this bug was fixed in flight 7, though, on my machine, the only difference between beta 1/2 and flight 7 is that the installer now gives me an error report instead of crashing "silently". I reported this "new" bug yesterday, so please have a look at bug #45771.

Hmm. I complete manage to miss that flight 7 was out. Going back to the web site it's obvious.
Indeed when I used the text installer (still Beta2). It warned me that it was unhappy about block size (or something - I forget). I had a feeling that the gui wasn't handling the output of the partitioning software properly.
Meanwhile, I am a (fairly) happy beta2 user.
