Bug Description

When trying to install kubuntu 6.06 beta i386 through espresso, espresso crashed after I gave it my user information. Upon closer inspection all the partitions on my hard drive where gone along with all the data.

If you still have the live CD running, I'd like you to attach /var/log/installer/espresso to this bug. Was there anything unusual about your partition table?

parted has a 'rescue' function which may help reconstruct the partition table.

Changed in espresso:
status: Unconfirmed → Needs Info

Same thing happened to me. I have 4 primary partitions (hda: swap, hda2: / (ext3), hda3: /home (ext3), hda4: Win XP (FAT32)).
I was able to recover the old partition table using gpart: https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/espresso/+bug/40464

I rebooted before I found out the partition table was gone and I didn't know about the partition rescue mode. I didn't lose much essential data though but thanks for the tip.

I think you can still recover your partitions as long as you didn't overwrite anything (e.g. installed ubuntu again). I rebooted a few times before I noticed that my partitions were gone, and I was able to recover them without a problem.

Attached is an error log from when I tried to test expresso. The installer crashed at the user-input screen, but thankfully my partition table is still ok. However, the installer won't start up again.

This is also bug 40464, so I'll mark it as a duplicate. I think I have a good handle on the problem now and should have it fixed soon; my apologies for the inconvenience and/or data loss caused.
