Bug Description

Binary package hint: ubiquity

Situation:
Installing Intrepid Ibex 64bit on a 500GB HD. Already a dual-boot of Vista and Hardy Heron 32bit present.
Using a live DVD to install.
There already are a lot of partitions present on the HD.
Choose manual partitioning, shrunk Hardy / partition and Hardy /home partition to make room for Interpid / and /home.
So for partitioning 2 new partitions would be created.
I choose to copy personal data of the Hardy /home to the new Intrepid /home.
Over 95% finished I think, then came a crash warning, choose to sent logs and was presented the opportunity to create an account for "launchpad".

From the details I remember and in the /var/log messages I see ubiquity is looking for /target/etc/apt/sources.lst but reports there is no such directory. On-screen message (now lost) reported a probable authorisation problem. However, /target is mounted in / but it points to my Vista boot partition. In gparted GUI I see two partitions with mountpoint /target: /dev/sda3 wich is / of Hardy and in the extended partition /dev/sda11 wich would become /home for Intrepid.

I know, this is a lot of partitions, I might be making things too complicated. Will try to attach logs and see how this develops. Hmm, can only add one attachment and in the top it says " Extra debug information will be added to the bug report automatically". I hope partman and syslog will be present then. Will keep a copy on USB drive.

Thanks for your attention.

Update:

After rebooting the PC I found that the grub boot menu was unchanged and the existing OS's still worked. That was a relief. Partitions were changed as I had ordered but the new ones were incompletely filled.

I tried various options in ubiquity to work arround the problem: Using existing partitions, removing and creating them manually or not copying data from my old /gome to the new /home. Alas, I got exactly the same errors.

Eventually I choose to install Intrpid Ibex 8.10 64 bit from the live DVD again but from the text promt and not the GUI. This worked for me, perhaps because ubiquity is not involved then?

So I have a working system now. Bug might be relevant to others, but not a priority for me any more.

gr.

Tonnie
