Intrepid alpha-2 installation not localised

I've been testdriving Kubuntu Intrepid alpha-2, and have found that the finished installation (from scratch) always is localised to English, even though I answer all questions regarding locality during installation with Norway.

At first I thought this was due to the lack of network connectivity during installation (see bug #135752), but now I tried an install with wired network connected and correctly set up, and it still didn't install any Norwegian language packs, /etc/default/locale said nothing about Norwegian locales, and so on. I had to set up the locale file myself, install all the language packs, configure KDE to use the Norwegian languages, and so on. (It would be impossible to do this if I didn't know English to begin with.)

There's also still something setting $LANGUAGE to "en_US" even though it is set to something else in /etc/default/locale. Haven't figured out who the culprit is there yet though.

OK. It may be that localisation just plain wasn't working, or it may be that something's going wrong with package acquisition.

This bug is filed against ubiquity, but we didn't release a desktop CD with Alpha 2. Were you in fact using the alternate install CD?

Could you please attach /var/log/installer/syslog from the installed system to this report? With any luck, it should have enough information for us to diagnose this.

I used the only installation ISO I could find on the FTP...

I researched a little bit and came to the conclusion that «ubiquity» is only the graphical/live-cd installer, and that it doesn't cover the text-mode installer (which is what I thought). If so then you're right that it is filed against the correct package as I was using the text-mode installer. Apologies for that, I blame it on the guy in comment #8 in bug #135752 though. =)

I'll be happy to try the graphical installation process too and see if that's any better (if it gets available in alpha-3), but I'm not sure I'll be able to use that one come release as it didn't support encrypted installs if I remember correctly.

I'm attaching that syslog file, and hope you can reassign the bug to the correct package.

I've now been playing with Kubuntu alpha-3, both the alternate and the LiveCD installation methods, both with internet connectivity available during installation.

It appears to me that localisation is completely broken at the moment. No matter how I do it, the installation ends up being localised to English. So either there's some common bug that affects both Ubiquity and the alternate CD installer, there's separate localisation-related bugs in both installers, or I'm doing something wrong.

Ubiquity does actually give a language-related error message when starting the installation, see bug #253908.

Er. You didn't select "No localisation" by any chance, did you? What exactly did you select in the first three screens of the installer?

No, I selected Norwegian whenever I was asked about anything regarding country/language. At least I remember selecting it on the ISOLINUX menu and also that the keyboard layout detecting program correctly determined Norwegian layout. I don't remember at the moment if there were any other places where I selected Norwegian, but I did certainly not select "no localisation" or anything like that.

I intend to try again when alpha-5 is out...

Same thing here on Alpha-5

Selected Russian from the first screen, walked through all the screens.

On the final screen, where it shows all the details before you click "Start Installation", there's an info string at the top: "Language: No localization"

It seems, Ubiquity switched to the C locale somewhere after selecting the ru_RU locale, judging by this log entries:

I tested alpha-5 (desktop CD) of Kubuntu 8.10 today (completely new intallation, no old /home partition or other baggage). The problem is not solved. I noted all the steps I did during the installation:

1) Selected Norwegian Bokmål at the ISOLINUX menu during boot, and chose «Installér Kubuntu» (Install Kubuntu).
2) The GUI installation wizard appeared, in Norwegian. Norwegian language was preselected. I clicked «Next».
3) In step 2 I chose a timezone of Oslo. Don't remember what was preselected.
4) In step 3 I chose a keyboard layout of Norway->Norway (USA->USA was preselected)
The rest of the installer did not have any language/locality-related questions. In the end a summary was shown, saying (in Norwegian) something like this (amongst other things that seemed irrelevant):
Language: Norwegian Bokmål
Keyboard setup: Norway
Place: Europe/Oslo

It then installed fine.

After rebooting the KDM screen shown was in English, so was KDE after I logged in. I was immediately presented with an error message which went something along these lines:

Error - Plasma Workspace
The file or folder /home/tore/Desktop/ does not exist.

However /home/tore/Skrivebord did exist (the Norwegian translation), so I assume some parts of KDE expect Norwegian locale, while other parts expect American. The time zone was correctly set to CEST though. I started a konsole and grabbed the output of "locale":

Note the discrepancy between $LANGUAGE and $LANG.

/etc/default/locale contains the follwing two lines:

I wonder where "DZ" comes from, it also occurs in Артём Попов's log. Algeria? Weird...
