As a result, the MBR portion of GRUB did not get overwritten, but the newer GRUB files were installed to the partition. GRUB update failed (according to syslog). Try removing DSL completely then try a clean install. You can add DSL afterward, but don't reinstall GRUB, just print out your menu.lst and add them to your new menu.lst file. Make sure you have the correct partition entries. As I mentioned, I think this is probably down to a RAM fault. If memtest86+ (available from the "Memory test" option on the CD boot menu) passes, feel free to reopen this bug.
