Running a test with either a modified iso or filesystem.
Result: Installer crashes at the point it is about to remove extra packages.

A test with a daily iso spun by the infra using a filesystem. manifest- minimal- removal fetched to the kubuntu seed seems successful, so the crash looks to be an artefact of trying to simulate a real case by pointing ubiquity at a tester provided file. If this continues to test ok, I'll mark this bug as invalid.
