Bug Description

Said bootloader failed. I aborted the install and it warned me I would possibly need to install a boot loader manually. I have no idea how to do that. I had the Ubuntu 16 version sucessfully installed and I thought I would install the new version. When I booted from the download disc of 17.10 it did not see my previously installed Ubuntu 16 which was okay as I did that yesterday and I lost no data.

My machine is a Lenovo ThinkPad and before I ran the DVD I touched the blue thinkvantage button which put me into bios. From there I selected escape and ran the DVD. That may have compromised the boot agent. So I restarted the machine and ran from the DVD with out the Blue button and I'm all installed and loving this latest Ubuntu version. All's well.

You tried to install grub to /dev/dm-0, which is an LVM logical volume. It needs to be installed to a hard disk, such as /dev/sda.

I had the same error come up. I was installing on a Dell Optiplex desktop.

I clicked on OK and got a further message "Bootloader install failed" "Sorry, an error occurred and it was not possible to install the bootloader at the specified location."
"How would you like to proceed?
() Choose a different device to install the bootloader on:
[gives dropdown with choices of all the devices]
() Continue without a bootloader
() Cancel the installation.

I chose "Choose a...." and selected "/dev/sda" from the drop down, which was the correct device for the drive I was installing onto.

Clicked OK and it just sat there did nothing. [repeated several times with same result]

I tried other choices and was not able to get the installation to proceed.

Tried the install again, but removed other drives from the system (there was an external usb backup and a thumb drive usb plugged in). Got exactly the same result: error and could not answer the dialog box to continue. Had to power-off reboot and start install over.

I reran the install again and everything was the same EXCEPT I did NOT select LVM.

The install completed this time.
