Your installation disk is corrupt. You will need to recreate it and should verify it using the check disc option from the boot menu.

Thanks for response. I've created many installation disks and USB installations. All basically act the same. Wonder if I'm getting bad downloads. Can you suggest where a good, known clean download can be obtained? At one time I know it said there were bugs in the installation file I believe. Would like to get this on my old XP machine for my kids, that's why was trying edubuntu last time.

You can verify the image file by running md5sum on it and comparing with the list of md5sums on the download site. More likely though, it is a cheap usb stick that has some bad spots. You can verify that the stick is ok by choosing the check disc option at the boot menu.
