Ubuntu installation error ASRock Z77 Extreme9 board

Bug Description
Several attempts to install 64 bit Ubuntu have failed with the following error:
Executing 'grub-install /dev/sda' failed
This is a fatal error
Hardware and other details:
ASRock Z77 Extreme9 Motherboard
120 GB SSD in SATA II port
latest version of Ubuntu 14.04.2 64 bit
not using ASMedia SATA III port, ASMedia SATA is disabled
have previously attempted to install dual boot Windows 7/Ubuntu, now installing only Ubuntu, Windows 7 has been removed
installing Ubuntu from USB memory stick
disabled Intel Rapid Start
