My findings for the livesession fails to shutdown properly issue were that in VirtualBox (repo version not Oracle) it fails.

Using qemu/virt-manager or hardware and it did shutdown properly after hitting Enter.

Finding the same today with the rebuilt 20150417.1 image.

sounds like we should see if this affects a bare metal install in both live
and otherwise.

ok - so what I have seen is.

Livesession - reboot works in kvm/hardware.

Reboot does not work from INSTALL in any of the arch's or type of install that I tried - vbox/kvm/hardware.

Tested in Ubuntu 64bit and Xubuntu 32/64 bit.

When I tested it with an actual install, the reboot nor shutdown worked.

Possibly affects bare metal install as well - tested on AMD Athlon XP 5000+, 4GB RAM, HDD 120GB, LCD on DVI; boot from DVD-RW: step 15+16 - prompt to remove media and press Enter did not appear, disk was ejected from the DVD-ROM drive, system hanged with screen suspended; after hard reset booted into Xubuntu OK. There is a remote possibility that reading the DVD-RW was not 100% correct at all times.

Confirming problem on VirtualBox (setup: VirtualBox 4.3.10_Ubuntu r93012; guest: 2CPU, 1G RAM, 1 disk dynamic resize; host: Xubuntu 12.04 LST, Lenovo T430s, i7, 8G RAM, SSD). Does not reboot, hangs indefinitely in the “Installation complete” screen with hourglass turning.

"There is a remote possibility that reading the DVD-RW was not 100% correct at all times." -- does not seem to be the case, the same behaviour repeated 3+ times on the same hw setup.

Brendan has Step #2 exactly correct:

"Select "Install" (not "Try before installing")"

I've tested both the Ubuntu GNOME and Ubuntu 20150417.1 amd64 images on bare metal and if the installation is started from the live DE all works as expected, but if you you choose Install while the image is booting restart fails once the install is complete.

The prompt to restart is displayed but after clicking on restart the disc ejects as it should, then the screen goes black and no key combination will complete the restart procedure.

So it's sort of a combination of bug #966480 and bug #1436715 with the exception that all works well as long as the installation is started from the live DE, but if install is chosen while booting the images the post-install reboot process is borked.

I need to amend my last comment. I just performed another installation on the same hardware starting from the live DE and I once again ended up with just a black screen after selecting Restart - this time with Ubuntu Mate amd64 but I doubt it's flavor specific ............ maybe it's just more likely to occur if the installation is started from the boot menu????

After clicking on restart the disk ejects but no message is displayed and after removing the disk (and closing tray) no key combo works to complete the reboot.

For Ubuntu 15.04 Release candidate 4/17/15 running on Virtualbox 4.3.26, live session, the guest fails to shut down or restart. Do I need to open a separate bug report for that? Please advise.

Installing Ubuntu MATE 15.04 Release candidate 4/17/15 as Virtualbox guest 4.3.26 - after clicking Restart now, the display/the guest freezes. A hard power off, and restart reveals the install went fine.

Erick Brunzell (lbsolost) wrote :

I've performed two more tests, one with Ubuntu GNOME - the other with Ubuntu Mate, and as I pay closer attention just after the disk is ejected my LCD display shows "No signal input" very briefly as the screen goes black. So it almost seems that X is freezing, or could X just be shutting down prematurely?
