ubiquity says grub-install failed, but it didn't

During upgrade of installation from 13.10 to Ubuntu Gnome 14.04 grub fails to install and crashes installer

This is not a case of grub being installed to a different drive than the user intended; this is a case of grub-install succeeding and ubiquity saying it failed.
