Bug Description

Binary package hint: ubiquity

Almost all keyboards sold in the Netherlands have the U.S. English keyboard layout, so it would make sense to set the default in ubiquity to that instead of the Dutch one.

Confirmed, this bites me every time (especially in the virtual terminals). Might be a duplicate though, but I couldn't find any.

This is the same as Bug #107181

It is not just a problem of ubiquity or console-setup. It is a problem throughout the whole system. And it is confusing for new users.

To put it more concisely: the default choice for Dutch users should be "US International" with variant "International (with dead keys)". This variant is important, because in Dutch there are words that contain letters with accents.

Fixing this would mean a welcome lessening of questions on the Dutch Ubuntu forum.

I can confirm this bug/suggestion. As a 27 year old dutch i don't think i have ever seen a dutch keyboard. I think it will be hard to buy one in the Netherlands.

I confirm this suggestion. I only know dutch keyboard's with a AT-plug. They are not in use anymore.

I also can confirm this bug/suggestion. I am dutch but I have never seen a dutch keyboard. Allways use the F3 key to change to "us-international" when booting from the live cd

The first thing i do when installing Ubuntu is replacing the Dutch Keyboard by the US Intl with dead keys. I will be pleased when a new distribution has solved this problem.

It's really efficient if they do the U.S. English keyboard layout as default, it saves a lot of problems about beginners who don't know which one layouts to choose.

On the Dutch forum, 75% of the newcomers has problems with the keyboard layout.
Every time rhe solution is the same: change to US International with dead keys.

Confirmed, I'm ashamed I didn't post a bug about this when I first mentioned it (must have been when Hoary came out...). A bad thing to get used to!

i also confirm this

dutch layout is very rarely used/produced in modern 2007

default layout should be: ¨US International - with dead keys¨

(also for xorg.conf)

Since an overwhelming majority in the Netherlands use the US International keyboard layout, this would indeed be a far more logical default setting.

This is good news. One remark: the standard choice for Dutch users should not be simply "US", but "US International (with dead keys)".

Further clarification: the Dutch keyboard needs the layout "US International (with dead keys)" because there are many words in Dutch with accents on the characters. Like ë, á, è, ï, ö. You catch my drift....

The layout "US International (with dead keys)" should therefore be the standard installation choice for Dutch users. Dutch programmers who dislike dead keys because it interferes with programming, can always make a different choice. But the mainstream Dutch user really needs the layout "US International (with dead keys)".

Greetz, Pjotr.
