Ubiquity fails to launch when live session selected from text menu

When booting up, I pressed a key to interrupt the boot, selected english language, and selected live session from the text menu. When I clicked the installer icon to run ubiquity, it blinked for a bit but the installer window never came up.

If I try selecting live session from the gui, or select install only, things seem to work though.

I tried the i386 image on a laptop here and also saw this when choosing live session from the gui menu.

Confirming with 20130925.1 image as well. Ubiquity is shown as running in ps output. yet is not displayed at all =( very strange.
