Whew!!! Has it been over 3 weeks??... Hard drive is toast!!! I tried so many ways to recover to new hard drive. Clonezilla, gparted copy and paste (which worked til the drive died completely), finally used http://www.matthartley.com/how-to-backup-your-ubuntu-software/ .... in conjunction with deja-dup restore of /home. I am almost there...

After reinstall of ubuntu 12.04 and following matt's procedure I get the following:

 Could not initialize the package information

An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information.

Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message:

'E:Opening /etc/apt/sources.list.d/bhdouglass-indicator-remindor-precise.list - ifstream::ifstream (13: Permission denied)'

ubuntu-bug fails>>> ubuntu-bug update-manager
