Bug Description

Putting special boot parameter:
live video=radeonfb:1440x900-32@60

(sorry i don't have the at sign on my computer because of the not finished installation) i succeed in getting correct screen display. Then, i start the installer (ubiquity) which apparantly works fine but then hangs on a point called 'Hardware Erkennung' (something like 'Checking hardware' - after an installation of a basic file system).

This happened today with the daily built 20121017 as well with a daily built of 3 days ago.

Instead of attaching the logs manually you can try

apport-collect 1067899

When there is a message from terminal that a launchpadlib is missing(or a other lib) than please install them manually.

When apport is not able to attach the needed logs from comment #3 than please attach them manually.

Anyway, you have hit an interesting problem. It will be of wider interest for powerpc people to get a deeper look at. It would be nice of you to work with..., you know someone with the hardware is needed.

ERROR: The launchpadlib Python module is not installed. This
functionality is not available.

Now, i'm only a simple user and it's a bit difficult for me to know

Hi Greg!

No, i don't think so, because i went into the same identical problem
when i used "your" values (1024x768 - which resulted anyway in the
correct screen, 1440x900, as well).

A personal question: I was very happy when i succeeded to install, via
alternative installer, 12.10 onto the powerbook. But now, i'm really
very sad about the fact, suspend (ram or disk) do not work. They only
seem to shut down the screen, fan, wireless and cpu continue to work.
in 12.04 that was perfect. And, btw, i have the same problem on a
Samsung 535 u3c (a double core amd64, extremely quick and smart.
Really on the samsun the problem is slightly different: suspend-to-ram
won't reawake, suspend-to-disk reawakes but shuts down hardwarewise
the wireless with no chance to reget it without reboot). Since i found
something by google i got the suspect, that might not be a lubuntu
thing but kernel related. So i tried out, on the samsung: Fedora 17
live (kernel 3.6 or so) and kubuntu 12.10 live, same result as with
lubuntu 12.10. Then, linuxmint debian 13 (kernel 3.2) and, voilà,
suspend works!!! (Small footnote: Looking a bit at this other distros
i realized how nice is the skin of lubuntu!!! :) ).

Now, as you can imagine, no suspend on a portable is not that
reasonable, would be interesting to know: Is this only a personal
problem. Then i'd have to try *MY* solution (either bricolage around
acpi or downgrading until there is hope for a systematical solution)
or if there is a reasonable prospective which makes waiting the best
way to go.

Thanks for your patience anyway, and thanks a lot for your big work!

Uli

Good Morning J.-S(when this is correct in your timezone).

To reply to your personal questions:

All issues you are encounter like suspend or backlight or sound or fan or wireless or ... well, all hardware driver related are primary problems of the linux kernel.

You have pointed out that there are less problems with kernel 3.2 and kernel 3.2 based distributions, but even this bugs occures with Ubuntu 12.10.

-> The cause for this is that Ubuntu 12.10 based on kernel 3.5.x and what you obserse are called regression bugs(a bug that is induced by programming activity on further versions and causes functionalities to break that work in a privious version).
Unfortunally this happens from time to time and it seems that it hit the the distance from kernel 3.2 to kernel 3.5 hard as you discribe. There are causes to tell for, but that would overwhelm the frame of a bugreport.

To get this all fixed you do not have to do downgrades. You can do sepatated bugreports for all this issues, but this is also the drawback for you on this. Many work and not only with the reporting(report for linux itself from the computers are affected: ubuntu-bug linux). The standard workflow is reporting -> asking (you) to install the very latest kernel from special ppa(manually!), which is in moment kernel3.7rc1, - > if it do what it should do a kernel bisection - > if it not do what should report upstream to kernel bugtracker. On linux bugtracker is also a dropdownfiled for regression bugs.

That for short and simplyfied on this. The special workflow may vary.

As I pointed out this is very elabourious to you(complicated process when you do the first time and takes hours) and you might feel more comfortable with using Ubuntu12.04.1.

On the other hand you are very welcome to do working on the linux kernel, because there are not so much powerpc people arround and you can do with your work direct help for this people(and make Linux at whole better; or not so buggy).

The problems you encounter will not go away(most properly for the most of them) with the time for Ubuntu12.10 Quantal, because the kernel version3.5.x will not change in the livetime of it(with the exeption of patching e.g from bisection -> see above). The next newer kernels will be incoporated in Ubuntu13.04 development.

As you can see I have marked this as offtopic, because for the most other readers here, this will be not of interest(save their time).

greetings

melchiaros

Hope my expanations help a bit on your desicion what to do.

I have read the apport-collect logs for ubiquity, but could not see any obvious problem there. May be someone with more experience can recognize more, but for now I would say, with respect to the trace in

WifiSyslog.txt

,that this is a kernel bug.

A quick internet search give the hint that failed paging request to

Unable to handle kernel paging request for data at address 0x0000004c

pointed(along other possibilities) to incompatible hardware.

Reading the trace shows

ieee80211

and

b43legacy

which indicates a driver problem with a broadcom wifi chip/adapter , which is propably integrated.

Hi! Thanks for your reply and, i'm sorry i replied to the bug address.
I had in mind to reply to Greg (Faith) whom i know a bit from
lubuntu-ppc list, so, i thought it might be allowed ;)

Anyway, if it is like you said, for the powerbook, i think i'll
downgrade (it's destinated to be used mainly by my wife in her
secondary, my primary :) , home. If Greg is reading: If there would be
needed some tester, i could play on it, from time to time booting from
an external firewire (?) ). For the Samsung i'd like to be up to date,
also because it's a new "toy".

To get newer kernels and to try out, is there a "How to . . ." somewhere?

TIA and have a nice sunday.

PS. I'm pretty much willed to help, but for sure, with and within my
limits. Certainly, i'm not a guy with square brackets in the eyes ;)

Oh, great. Thanks a lot, so at least i wouldn't have to do compiling
(i'd have been pretty much unable to). Anyway, stupid question: When i
tried the latest one, trying to install the linux-headers i got the
error msg:
-----------

Seems there is missing the header package on which the headers-generic
relay (?). But: where is it?

Mhh,the procedure for 3.7 seems to have changed bit.

Anyway,

copy all 3 files you need (headers, image , and image extra) in one separated folder (e.g kernel37 -> create this)

open up a terminal and swith in the kernel37 folder with the cd command

cd kernel37

than run in this folder:

sudo dpkg -i *.deb

The * indicates not a substitution it is a regular expression instead, which tells the dpkg command to install all files in the folder that ends with .deb

When you run this, dpkg should organise the installation in a way where no missing dependences occure(when you have downloaded all needed files).

Please keep in mind that rc is not stable. You should only use this for testing or when the system is not able to start in a other way.

They are not supported in a other way especially here by the kernel team. When you use them on a daily basis you can encounter bugs in a normal working day, you have not ever seen before. In the last case you are on your own.
