unable to install grub in a partition

Binary package hint: ubiquity

trying to install grub into /dev/sda3, ubiquity fails:

$ cat grubRizlOs

       [ Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. For
         the first word, TAB lists possible command
         completions. Anywhere else TAB lists the possible
         completions of a device/filename. ]
grub> root (hd0,2)
grub> setup --stage2=/boot/grub/stage2 --prefix=/boot/grub (hd2)
 Checking if "/boot/grub/stage1" exists... yes
 Checking if "/boot/grub/stage2" exists... yes
 Checking if "/boot/grub/e2fs_stage1_5" exists... yes
 Running "embed /boot/grub/e2fs_stage1_5 (hd2)"... failed (this is not fatal)
 Running "embed /boot/grub/e2fs_stage1_5 (hd0,2)"... failed (this is not fatal)
 Running "install --stage2=/boot/grub/stage2 /boot/grub/stage1 d (hd2) /boot/grub/stage2 p /boot/grub/menu.lst "... failed

Error 21: Selected disk does not exist
grub> quit

What version of Ubuntu were you using back then? Were you able to install grub after all?

looking at the submission date, that was edgy

Are you able to reproduce this issue with a later version of Ubuntu? Edgy is not supported anymore.
