Bug Description

Tried to do a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04 on a new Toshiba P850. I received an error about not being able to install the bootloader in the preferred place. I selected the top alternate location, which the installer accepted. A minute or two later it stated the installer had crashed and did not give any other error messages. I was installing from a DVD with the .iso burned to it.

This seems to be only a wrong checksum of a download, but may be not the cause for the failed install.

Later on in UbiquitySyslog.txt there are segmentation faults recorded:

As can be seen it ends with a segfault in apt.

The starting of the segfaults is on handling dev/sda1 which is indentified(label) as msdos.

Seems to indicate that this here is a dual boot attemped.

I was able to install using 12.04.1 from a USB disk. During the install I received an error message saying files do not match what is on the disk, however I don't remember which files they were. The install was able to continue through the error. However, the system now crashes often, especially when installing packages such as vim. Any use of apt-get can result in the entire system crashing. A few times commands, such as opening a file with emacs, result in a seg fault and a core dump. Firefox will crash if pages have large amounts of Flash, and now won't open any pages, even after restarting it. Thank you very much for your help with this.
