first install did not install grub. Second install crashed at the end.

Thank you for reporting this bug. I was looking through the logs and I see many errors about removing critical services, so can you try to reinstall fresh to get some clearer logs?

At the end of the logs, I see this message many times:

SystemError: E:Write error - write (32: Broken pipe)

I am not so sure what I see here.

Just for clarification: Have you used a Ubuntu12.10 cd to upgrade an existing Ubuntu installation (previous version)? This would explain the remove entries.

Or was it really a fresh install??
