Bug Description

Ubuntu Quantal Desktop 21120523 failed to install

Installation failed in timezone step and while copying files

TEST CASE:
1. Start Ubiquity from a Live Session
2. Keep the defaults for the steps language and prepare
3. partman: select 'Erase and install Quantal'
4. timezone: Press continue before file copy starts

ACTUAL RESULT:
This crash

From debug log (first error is just a typo on my side):

The file copy error only occurs when the user quit the ubi-timezone error dialog because /target is unmounted and ubiquity continues the copy.

In my case ubi failed with code 2 selected "try again" button, no change, then "continue" just to see if the dire warnings would mean anything.

The install boot was from USB flash memory "startup disk" created by precise, and the install target a USB hard drive so hopefully the main hard drive would not be damaged.

Install completed satisfactorily, and on rebooting the correct time - timezone 5 - is used.

This was on a Acer Aspire 1 netbook.

Same USB flash memory used to install on hard drive of Compaq Presario tower, no errors.

Anyone have any idea what the "code 2" could mean?

Jerry

"Code 2" isn't debuggable on its own without logs.

Colin's comment #5 - I've done a couple installs since, some success and some fail (Squashfs unable ....) without repeat of the Code 2.
What logs should I look for in this case? There are a number scattered around with various failures reported. Didn't most of the useful ones (if any) disappear when install completed?

Thanks, Jerry

Thanks, Colin.

Did a zsync and install again today, same code 2 error, install went on fine. I did save /var/log/*log doesn't look like you need it.

BTW, quantal startup disk creator not successful. Booted to a purple splotch cursor black X instead of arrow, and with just the Examples and Install icons, no desktop launcher or panel.

Install successful using precise startup disk creator to USB flash, only error was the code 2 and on booting the very typical _usr_lib_gnome-settings-daemon_gnome-settings-daemon.1000.crash which doesn't seem to cause any trouble.

Up and running. Will try some more zsync .iso installs on netbook, notebook, tower as Alpha 1 approaches.

This bug was fixed in the package ubiquity - 2.11.4

---------------
ubiquity (2.11.4) quantal; urgency=low

  [ Colin Watson ]
  * Force the locale to en_US.UTF-8 for the timezone tests.
  * Fix seddery of clock-setup/finish-install.d/10clock-setup to handle
    changes in clock-setup 0.110 (LP: #1003443).
  * Automatic update of included source packages: flash-kernel
    3.0~rc.4ubuntu1.
  * In the shell script syntax check, filter out *.po and *.pot files
    straight away before doing the slower check using file(1). There are
    lots of these and it takes quite a long time otherwise.
  * Add several Lintian overrides.

  [ Dmitrijs Ledkovs ]
  * Remove migration-assistant's UI definitions.

  [ Martin Pitt ]
  * scripts/simple-plugins, ubiquity/plugins/ubi-prepare.py: Move from Jockey
    to "ubuntu-drivers autoinstall". Add ubuntu-drivers-common Recommends: for
    this.
  * scripts/plugininstall.py: Drop jockey --check-composite call. It is
    obsolete as the free drivers now provide 3D support. Automatic
    installation of graphics drivers is controlled and covered by
    ubuntu-drivers autoinstall now.

  [ Mario Limonciello ]
  * Don't encode callbacks in UTF8 in the timezone plugin anymore. The strings
    are already unicode.

Indeed not, thanks.

Please file a separate bug about this on usb-creator. It may well be a
regression due to the Python 3 port.
