Bug Description

Binary package hint: tuxmath

When I choose Hebrew from the login screen, the Hebrew translation is applied and when opening TuxMath, all text is missing.

The numbers are displayed, but menus are just blank (screenshot is attached).

If you need help, please guide me and I will try to help.

Thanks for reporting this. I'm going to wave this bug under the noses
of the tuxmath developers.

It may be that tuxmath doesn't yet have support for right-to-left languages.

I've spoken to upstream. The version of tuxmath in Hardy doesn't support right-to-left languages. The version in SVN has been converted to use SDL_pango and does. This bug won't be fixed until that version is released.

There is a bug in that launchpad allows people to translate packages into languages that the program can't support.

Thanks for your reply.

When do you think the new release will be released and added to the Ubuntu repositories?

Caroline Ford (secretlondon) wrote :

It's still under development, and I expect they won't make a release until the end of Google summer of code ie early autumn. That will probably mean Intepid +1 - sorry :(

cornerstone1978 why have you assigned this bug to yourself? What is there to work on?

Upstream are now planning on making a new release to fix this bug. I'll try and get it backported.

Unassigning cornerstone as they don't seem to be working on it.

Is there any way that I can contact the developers to motivate them fix this bug?

I think this is now fixed in 1.6.3 which is in intrepid. Could you test it?

These are the fixes the developers made upstream when we told them about the bug:

2008.April-May (svn.debian.org/tux4kids - revision 501)
Version 1.6.3
        Build:
Create a CMake build, including support for internationalization
(builds the intl directory on Mac OS X) and SDL_Pango. This also
builds a .dmg on Mac OS X.
        Code:
Fix pointer bug in mathcards when initializing with wrong questions.
Fix a number of compiler warnings.
      i18n:
Added po files for many languages from Ubuntu's Launchpad

      Tim Holy <email address hidden>

2008.May.05 (svn.debian.org/tux4kids - revision 477)
        Code:
          SDL_Pango support for right-to-left languages

Contributed by Ahmed Sayed <email address hidden>
--------------
They've imported the entire hebrew translation from launchpad so everyone gets it, not just ubuntu users.

So if I install Intrepid, tuxmath with Hebrew will work?

Ofir I can confirm your report while checking with Ubuntu 8.04 from repositories
Maybe its also a fair suggestion to flip the whole interface to be RTL friendly (they're just kids you know...)

Caroline Ford (secretlondon) wrote :

So the interface needs swapping round as well. We didn't realise and I will tell them.

Could someone explain what the problem is now - preferably with a screenshot.

Upstream say:

"Can you clarify what this means---in the math, in the menus, where? Does it
mean the characters are rendered in reverse order (i.e., like "redro esrever")
or does it mean something else?"

My guess was that the thing still read left-to-right so that the translation of score was to the left of the number, when presumably they should be on the right.

does this ever occur in trusty or later?

I assume this must be fixed now, right?
