You can install the package timidity or the package TuxGuitar-JSA to get the tuxguitar sound working.
TuxGuitar-JSA is a plugin for tuxguitar, so it seems more logical to use, but the quality is much better with timidity.
I should be installed and configured when installing tuxguitar.

yes, just install tuxguitar-jsa if you're short on diskspace..

Anyway tuxguitar-alsa/oss depends on timinity ... and tuxguitar-alsa/oss is suggested...

What about platforms with no sound ?

Please close this bug, or I'll do ...

BTW, I am looking for testers for snapshots versions :

I think the point of this bug is that by default, the sound of tuxguitar is not working.
That forces the users to look in google or forums looking for "no sound in tuxguitar" to get it to work, that is not user friendly.
True story: a friend has been using tuxguitar with no sound for months, he thought it was a bug in the program.
I wonder how many people tried it, saw it didn't work, and uninstalled it.

The sound should be working by default. For platforms with no sound... users would not expect sound then! An error message could be displayed in this case anyway...

The best approach IMHO is to install tuixguitar-jsa automatically along with tuxguitar, and display a message to the user saying he/she could get better sound quality by installing timidity and configuring it in the preferences.
Maybe timidity should not be installed by default, as it is a deamon that would be running all the time.

Or, if nothing else, at least display a message on the first start up explaining what to do to get sound.

I second what kenden reported. tuxguitar-jsa is just 81.9kb on jaunty, it should be made a dependency for tuxguitar. I was lucky that I stumbled across this bug report while googling before I follow the modprobe snd_seq && aoss tuxguitar suggestion from other sites for the same problem!

Doesn't it work with OpenJDK6 and SUN JRE 6?
That should be enough if so, those two are the main JVMs in Ubuntu.

I did a bit of testing with Tuxguitar in Karmic and found out that the easiest way to get sound working is to use tuxguitar-jsa. It now uses Gervill (https://gervill.dev.java.net/) which works fine with OpenJDK.

The patch that I attached makes this the default behaviour.

Any comments or other ideas?

I think this is back again at Natty, 'cuz it doesn't install tuxguitar-jsa by default, not it installs timidity...
